Preparing for your Statement Photography Session

Proper preparation for your photo session can make a huge difference in the final outcome of the photos. It can be the difference between a photo that looks rushed, unkempt, and unprofessional and one that looks polished, put-together, and professional. Being well-prepared can also help you to feel more confident and relaxed during the photo session, which will translate into more natural-looking and flattering photos.

And “hello self-care!”  Preparing for a photo session is a great excuse to take care of yourself. By focusing on your appearance, you are taking the time to focus on yourself and your needs. This can be a great way to boost your self-confidence and self-esteem, which can have a positive impact on all areas of your life.

When you make the time to prepare, you’ll present yourself in the most flattering way possible. This will make a huge difference in how you feel about the final product and give you the best possible outcome that you’ll be dying to share and show off.

Our top 20 tips to prepare for your photo shoot

  1. Get plenty of rest the week before your photo shoot to ensure you look refreshed and energized.
  2. Book a facial 1 week before your shoot (this will ensure your skin looks its best on the day)
  3. Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin and make it look plump and healthy.
  4. Exfoliate your skin to remove any dead skin cells and reveal a smooth complexion.
  5. Moisturize your skin to keep it hydrated and supple.
  6. Get a haircut and style your hair to ensure it looks neat and polished.
  7. Get a manicure and pedicure to ensure your hands and feet look neat and polished.
  8. Plan out your outfits and accessories ahead of time to ensure you look your best.
  9. Bring a few different outfits and accessories to the photo shoot so you have options.
  10. Bring any props you may want to use in your photos.
  11. Make sure your clothes are clean, ironed and fit properly before the photo shoot.
  12. Avoid any drastic changes to your appearance before the photo shoot, such as drastic hair colour changes or tattooing
  13. Avoid sun exposure or tanning before the photo shoot to prevent uneven skin tone.
  14. Avoid alcohol and caffeine leading up to the photo shoot to prevent puffiness and dehydrated skin.
  15. Make sure to eat a healthy meal before the photo shoot to ensure you have energy and are feeling good during the shoot.
  16. Practice good posture and body language to ensure you look confident and composed in your photos
  17. Avoid “that time” of the month to ensure you are not feeling bloated or cranky but at your best.
  18. Shave the night before. This tip mostly applies to facial hair or if you’ll be getting detailed shots of your legs. Shaving the night before your photo shoot will reduce any redness that may come from irritated skin.
  19. Be open to direction from the photographer and trust their expertise.
  20. Relax and have fun! A photo shoot should be a fun and enjoyable experience.
